A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
