New research indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
